This beautiful idyllic town is situated in the north of the Eifel between the towns of Euskirchen and Blankenheim. It's a medieval town which can still be seen in many places. Around the city there are still large parts of the city walls including a considerable number of towers.
A rustic town on the river Lieser. The eye-catchers of this town are the castles of Oberburg and Niederburg.
The town is best known for its spring water of the same name. This place has a number of impressive mountains as eye-catchers. These are tending to make one think of the Dolomites. This is the reason why they are sometimes called the Gerolstein Dolomites.

Situated in the village of Bleialf is a (former) mine, Grube Neue Hoffnung or the Mühlenberger Stollen. The mine makes a nice outing and a chance to learn more about the history of mining in the area. Please note that the mine is only open from May to October. Visitors to the mine can see how mining was done, how the ore was extracted from the mines. Plus, you can get to know all geological features of the area of the Eifel; in addition to the guided tour of the mine shafts, there is also an educational tour around the mine, the Mühlenberger Stollen, and Bleialf. There is a short route of 3 kilometres and a long route of 6 kilometres to learn all about the mining and mountaineering history of the area.
Most people will know the Nürburgring, the racetrack in the middle of Nürburg. The Nürburgring is one of the best hiking spots on the Eifel and well worth a visit. The racetrack, nicknamed "Green Hell" came to be one of the most famous racetracks in the world. In 1976, the Austrian Formula One driver, Niki Lauda, crashed here in a serious, almost fatal crash.
There are several waterfalls on the Eifel. One special waterfall is the Dreimühlen waterfall near Nohn. The Dreimühlen waterfall, also called the Nohner waterfall is not so special because of its size. But because this waterfall grows a little bit every year, it is a special natural feature and a well-known landmark in the Eifel region. The three streams of the Ahrbach which feed the Dreimühlen Waterfall are rich in calcium and carbonated. This creates the so-called carbon sinter rock, which is soft and porous and so easily grows moss on it. This moss petrified, which makes the waterfall grows between 8 and 10 centimetres every year.
The waterfall is now about nine meters and the drop is about five meters. Because there is a visible crack, it is feared that a piece will break off.
The Geierlay suspension bridge is the longest, most spectacular pedestrian bridge in Germany. If you have no fear of heights and if you want to experience something special, going for a walk across this bridge is something you simply have to do. The spectacular Geierlay is situated or, better yet, hanging close to the town. The bridge is not in the Eifel, but a day trip to this location is definitely worth it when you are in the Eifel. A walk across the 360-meter long bridge, 100 meters above the Mörsdorfer Bachtal, is not for those who are afraid of heights. But if you are up to the challenge, you will be treated to an unforgettable experience.
In the east of the Eifel, not far from well-known locations like Mayen and Koblenz, is the Laacher See. An impressive lake surrounded by the great natural beauty of the Eifel. The Laacher See is breathtakingly beautiful to look at, and the crater lake has an air of mystery at the same time. The lake as a circumference of 8 kilometers, and is surrounded by magnificent wooded hills.
The Laacher See was created nearly 13,000 years during the eruption of the Laacher Volcano. The volcanic activities can still be observed. On the east side of the crater lake, you can see the water bubbling. CO2 is released from the soil, making for a rather special and impressive sight.
East of Monschau is Ordernsburg Vogelsang. This fortress was built between 1934 and 1936 as a training camp for the SS. After the Second World War, it was used as an exercise area by British and Belgian military personnel. In 2006, the monumental complex was opened to the public.
You can view the complex by yourself or with a guide. Tours are provided in various languages.
At a short distance from the fortress, you will find the ghost village of Wollseifen. This village can only be reached via hiking trails. The “village” has been used for many years as a military training ground by the British, the Belgians, and later by NATO.
The Trasshöhle in the Brohltal are impressive caves that you can view and explore. You can learn all about the formation of the caves and the area here.
Bitburger is the leading beer from the Eifel and perhaps the leading beer from Germany. This world-famous brand is known for its slogan “Bitte ein Bit”. The brewery is situated in the great (shopping) town of Bitburg, and the history of the world-famous brand of beer goes back a long way.
Near the town of Irrel is the Westwall Museum. Here, you can view an old bunker that was part of the Westwall. An interesting and fascinating piece of history from the Second World War.
This bunker, the Katzenkopf, served as the northern defense of the road from Cologne to Luxembourg. There were over 45 rooms on the various floors, serving as accommodations, waiting facilities, a medical post, storage, a kitchen, lookouts, battle stations, etc. Furthermore, the bunker had its own power facility for light and heating, air and water pumps, as well as a telephone center. On the lowest floor of the bunker, there are two long corridors measuring 138 meters, as well as a 180-meter deep well.
A sight remaining from the Cold War is Ausweichsitz NRW. During the threat of the cold war, nuclear bunkers were built everywhere to serve as refuge during a nuclear attack. The bunkers were mostly intended for governments and leaders who could manage the country or an area in case of a crisis or attack.
The bunker in theEifel, Ausweichsitz NRW, served as a shelter for de Landesregierung of Nordrhein Westfalen during the cold war. From the bunker, the area could be managed in case of a calamity. In the bunker, it looks like time has stopped. Everything is in its original condition and you feel like as if you were in the sixties.
